Sourcing N07718 (Inconel 718): Critical Specs for API 6ACRA Compliance

Navigating heat treatments, melting processes, and supply chain realities for high-temp nickel superalloys.

If you are sourcing materials for downhole tools, wellhead components, or subsea equipment, UNS N07718 (Inconel 718) is likely on your Bill of Materials. It is the industry standard for a reason: it handles the "sour" trio—high pressure, high temperature, and corrosive fluids (H2S/CO2)—better than almost any other commercial alloy.

However, simply asking for "Inconel 718" isn't enough. For critical Oil & Gas applications, the difference between a successful deployment and a catastrophic failure often lies in the melting process and the heat treatment cycle. At SHUNFU METAL, we see many RFQs that lack the specific parameters required for API 6ACRA compliance.

Here is what procurement managers need to verify before signing the Purchase Order.

1. The Melting Process Matters

N07718 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium alloy. Its strength comes from the gamma double prime (γ″) phase. To achieve the purity required for aerospace and oilfield use, single melting isn't sufficient.

We manufacture N07718 using advanced multi-step melting processes to ensure a homogeneous microstructure free from segregation. Your MTC should reflect one of these sequences:

  • Option A: Basic Electric Furnace (EF) + AOD/VOD + Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR).
  • Option B: Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) + Electroslag Remelting (ESR) or VAR.

Why this matters to a buyer: Improper melting leads to inclusions that act as crack initiation sites under high stress. Always verify the melting path on the certification.

2. 120K vs. 140K Yield Strength

Depending on your specific application—whether it's a drill collar or a subsea fastener—you will need a specific strength designation. We supply N07718 in two primary conditions per API 6ACRA:

Designation 0.2% Yield Strength (Min) Hardness (HRC) Typical Application
120K 120 ksi (827 MPa) 32 - 40 Standard downhole tools
140K 140 ksi (965 MPa) 34 - 40 High-stress wellhead components

Achieving these properties requires precise Solution Annealing (1870°F – 1925°F) followed by Age Hardening. View our full mechanical property tables here.

3. Availability and Form Factors

Lead time is often the bottleneck in project management. While custom forgings are available, we maintain regular stock of common dimensions to expedite urgent maintenance or completion schedules.

Forged Round Bars

Diameter: 80mm – 1200mm

Condition: Forged, heat treated

Rolled Round Bars

Diameter: 10mm – 300mm

Condition: Hot rolled, solution annealed

We also offer machining services including deep hole boring and API threading. This allows you to purchase near-net-shape components, reducing your internal machining costs and scrap rates.

4. Trust but Verify

Never accept N07718 without a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) according to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2. At SHUNFU METAL, our quality control includes:

  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT) per ASTM A388.
  • Charpy V-Notch Impact testing (down to cryogenic temps).
  • Macro and microstructure examination.
  • Full traceability to the melt source.
